National Senior Health and Fitness Day

Come celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day with us on Wednesday, May 31! We will be joining over 150,000 older adults throughout the country who will be participating in this special event. This year’s theme is “With Movement…There’s Improvement!” and there are plenty of ways to get you moving here at the Center! Whether it’s Zumba, line dancing, yoga, tai chi, water aerobics or chair/stand up aerobic classes, there is something for everyone! 

 We will begin our Functional Fitness/Silver Sneakers Classic class at 10AM. Afterwards we will be presenting our annual Wayne Senior Center Fitness Awards at 10:45AM. The first award, the Senior Center Fitness Award, will go to the person who has been most dedicated to improving their health through the morning exercise program. Our second award, the WSC Fitness Cup, will go to our Fitness Center member who has proven their dedication to his or her workout. Healthy refreshments will follow. Please join us as we celebrate your commitment to maintain and improve your health and fitness.

Joel Lampley from Hear Again Now will be here on Thursday, May 4, and Thursday, June 1, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Joel is a hearing instrument specialist who works with different kinds of hearing devices. He is available to clean and check your hearing aids, provide a hearing screening, and answer any questions you might have.

Local mixed media artist Linnie Greenberg and her partner Virginia Conover will be here to teach two exciting art workshops! On Thursday, June 1 at 10:30AM they will present a FREE Collage workshop, all supplies included. Then on Thursday, June 8 at 1pm they will present a FREE Life Story Bookmaking class, with all supplies included. Please feel free to bring your own pictures, or personal items that you would like to include in either workshop. You can sign up for one or both classes. History of Westover Bird Sanctuary

During the 1920’s,Westover Bird Sanctuary in Devon was the site of the Pennsylvania Fireworks Display Company, Inc.  Gail Cappelli and Michele Hawk will speak about the “History of Westover Bird Sanctuary” and the earthshaking events that occurred on April 3, 1930, when a series of explosions destroyed the factory.

Delaware County Senior Games

The Delaware County Senior Games will be held Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 23. Events will be held in bocce, bowling, shuffleboard, golf, billiards, horseshoes, table tennis, pickleball, Wii bowling, track and field, and more! You can participate as an athlete or as a volunteer. Volunteers can serve as timekeepers, registrars, starters, judges, award presenters and organizers. If you need more information or would like to participate in the games as an athlete or volunteer, please contact Lisa. Registration forms are available at the front desk at the Center.

Mind Matters Lecture

On Monday, June 19 at 10:45 AM we will watch Jim Thorpe and His Impact on PA Native Americans. James Francis Thorpe was an American athlete and Olympic gold medalist. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Thorpe became the first Native American to win a gold medal for his home country. Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won Olympic gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon, and played American football (collegiate and professional), professional baseball, and basketball.

On Monday, May 22 at 10:45 AM we will watch Faith and Freedom in the Civil War. During the 19th century, the slavery debate was influenced significantly by biblical passages to support one side or the other. Both sides came to interpret scripture in ways that would support their views. Ms. Barbara Franco will explain how those interpretive principles still have great influence on today’s society. Ms. Franco is a noted scholar on the history of faith in America.
